PREDICTING THE REMOVAL PERFORMANCE OF ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS IN WATER TREATMENT
Abstract. The problem that will be presented was posed during the European Study Group with Industry, held in Waggeningen, Netherlands in January, 2019. It is concerned with water treatment using carbon filters. The company, posing the problem, develops software for modelling and simulating the performance of such filters. This software is based on mathematical models, described in terms of partial differential equations. One of the main problems in the present state of the software, however, is the fact that the used numerical methods often do not converge or, when they do, they are relatively slow.
In the present talk, we shall present a mathematical model for water treatment, using carbon filters. We shall derive a stable numerical method for its approximate solution. On the basis of this particular example, we shall get into various details that are often important when one solves real problems with the help of a computer.
