Department of Algebra provides basic courses in Linear algebra and Abstract algebra at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. In addition to the compulsory courses, the Department of Algebra offers a variety of elective courses that introduce numerous sections of modern Algebra and are part of Bachelor and Master Degree programs.
The history of the Department of Algebra is closely related to the development of Algebra as a scientific field in our country. From 1918 to 1923, the Head of the department was Emanuil Ivanov, one of the founders of University of Sofia. The famous Bulgarian mathematician Nikola Obreshkov was elected Associate Professor at the Department of Abstract Algebra in 1922 and was its head from 1928 to 1963. After Obreshkov the Department of Algebra was managed by Yordan Duychev (1963-1966), Kiril Dochev (1967), Dimitar Dimitrov (1976-1981), Mihail Gavrilov (1981-1997), Prof. Kerope Tchakerian (1997-2007), Prof. Dr. Nedyalko Nenov (2007-2012) and Assoc. Prof. Evgenia Velikova (2012-2016). At present, the Head is Assoc. Prof. Maya Stoyanova.
For years the lecturers from the Department taught Assoc. Prof. Plamen Siderov and co-authors’ textbooks. Over time, the subject of scientific research in the Department of Algebra has gradually shifted from traditional studies of the zeros of polynomials to the study of general algebraic structures and their applications.
