Computational Linguistics

This Master's programme is designed for Mathematics or Informatics bachelors who do not necessarily have graduated from the University of Sofia. The former does not provide preliminary knowledge in Computational Linguistics. It aims at students‘ specializing in Computational Linguistics theory and applications at the level of the best analogous programmes in the world. Graduates of the programme will have undergone a solid theoretical training aimed at non-trivial applications, which in itself ensures their good professional realization.

Focus, educational goals

The programme is aimed at students willing to receive an  in-depth training on the fundamental areas of Computational Linguistics: Automata and Computability, Structures and Algorithms, Probabilities and Statistics, Mathematical Logic, General Linguistics. Along with the acquisition of a rich variety of fundamental knowledge, a thorough study of the theoretical foundations and technologies of the most important modern applications of Computational Linguistics is also sought after: machine translation, search and retrieval of information, presentation of knowledge, etc.

Training (knowledge and skills)

The compulsory courses in the programme provide an in-depth preparation in the world of concepts that model the underlying language phenomena. Elective courses are aimed at studying specialized theories and methods for implementing a number of common specific applications. The programme also includes two compulsory practices in which students study the functioning and management of specific modern systems of computer linguistics.

Professional competence

Graduates of this Master's programme will have acquired profound knowledge in the main areas of Computer Linguistics. Masters successfully completing the program are prepared to develop both new technologies and new applications of Computer Linguistics. They are also experts in the application and use of computer-linguistic systems in practice.

Professional realization

Graduates of this Master's programme have a wide range of professional realization: from a number of computer companies that are in need of well-trained computer literacy specialists to the academic sphere both as lecturers at universities and as researchers in research institutes and leading research firms. They are not just users of technologies developed by leading corporations and institutes, but they are also professionals capable of being fully involved in the research and development process of creating the next cutting-edge applications such as Google Translate, Apple Siri, or IBM Watson.
