Welcome to FMI

FMIThe Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI) was established in 24.11.1889 as Physics and Mathematics section at the first Higher Education School in Bulgaria – now known as Sofia University. It was at that time the faculty train for the teaching profession in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Natural Sciences. In 1904, together with the transformation of the Higher School into a university, this section was renamed into Faculty of Physics and Mathematics with departments: “Bases of Higher mathematics”, “Higher mathematics and Geometry” and “Analytic mechanics”. Gradually, the degree programmes grew up and became faculties, namely: Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Geology and Geography. In 1963, a separate Faculty of Mathematics was established with two education paths: mathematics-applied profile and mathematics-pedagogical profile. The launching of a degree programmes in Mechanics led to renaming the faculty into Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics in 1973. New specializations were established: “Computer mathematics”, “Mechanics”, “Computers specialist “, “Teachers  of Mathematics” and the training was finished with master of sciences degree. New specialization “Mathematics and Informatics” was launched in academic year 1984/85. Further on, due to the development of information technologies, Informatics also became an important part of the curriculum. The degree programme in Informatics was launched in 1986 and the faculty got its present name- The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics/FMI/.
In Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI) work 150 highly qualified lecturers: 9 professors; 4 associate professors, DSc; 67 associate professors, PhD; 41 head assistants (23 PhD of which); 19 senior assistants (2 PhD of which) and 14 assistants.  Presently the number of full-time students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics is about 2 000 distributed in bachelor degree program in Mathematics, Informatics, Computer Science, High School Teachers in Mathematics and Informatics, Applied Mathematics, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Statistics.
Many of lecturers have taught at renowned universities in the USA, Canada, and Western Europe, Russia and participate in different international scientific forums and symposia. This accounts for the high quality of the teaching process at the FMI proof of which is the performance of its students at international competitions in mathematics and informatics. The students realize like specialists as in our country and all in a foreign country.
The students of FMI win regularly front line of international competitions in mathematics and informatics. At 20th international computer programming competition in 1996 they finished fourth among more than 1000 universities.  At 10th international competition in mathematics in 2003 our students won first and third places as well. At regional computer programming competition for South-Eastern Europe in 2003 the student's teams won first, second and seventh places and were classed for participation in the World championship. The next two years the teams of FMI presented successfully in the regional competition. In 2004 the best team finished second in regional competition and was included among the team finalists for the World Olympiad in Shanghai where it finished 29 among 78 universities.
Our graduates are wanted and chosen office workers at firms, banks, state institutions and they win contests for lecturers and science workers in higher schools and science institutes. Really many of which continue their education in prestigious universities in Western Europe and North America.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics dispose of circulating library with nearly 80 000 tomes that contains the oldest collection of mathematical literature on the Balkans with computer halls and modern technique appointment.
Each  full-time student after completion of first or second course wins the right to be trained and acquires second or new specialization.
